Bill...yes, vehicles had a unique identifier pre-'81. However the capitalized "Vehicle Identification Number" is a specific animal - the standardized 17 character thing we've all grown to know so well in the past 25 years. Try doing a CarFax search pre-'81, you'll see what I mean.
