The way you learn the "lore" at Stovebolt is to start with a steel brush and clean the crud off the casting numbers.
Record the numbers. If you have a PDA, PMD, other handheld gadget or regular computer, see if you can get a hit on the net.
Also try http://www.gmpartswiki.com. Do a specific search (in quotes) here on Stovebolt or other sites.
Take measurements. This is what most people do.
When you get stumped, post your questions with as much information as you can provide.
