Electrolysis is another option.
I'm at my daughter and son in law's place. The photo is of his electrolysis setup. He just pulled a driveshaft out, and it's pretty dang clean. He uses rebar electrodes around the perimeter and hangs the workpiece from the PVC pipe across the middle. Uses a battery charger for a power supply.
