To polarize your generator, follow these steps.
With everything installed and the engine turned off, use a pair of needle nose pliers or a jumper wire to briefly connect the BAT terminal with the GEN terminal on the voltage regulator. You'll get a little spark and that's all you need. Your generator will be correctly polarized.
I believe you'll find these instructions in the FSM but I may be thinking of my Cadillac manual.
Yes, I just checked. Section 12-18 of the 1948-1952 Chevrolet truck service manual details this procedure.
