Sounds like you have rust particles or other junk in your gas tank. You're likely to continue having problems until you clean out the tank as suggested. Even worse, you're going to be driving down the road and it's going to die on you. Trust me as I speak from personal experience. The problem that confounded me the most was that the fuel pump worked intermittently because rust particles would get stuck in the one-way valve, allowing the fuel to flow backwards and not go up to the carb.
