If the clutch is adjusted properly, there should be somewhere between 3/4" and 1" of free pedal movement before you feel the pressure plate springs begin to compress. You should be able to shift the transmission into any gear position with the clutch depressed, and the vehicle should start to move when the clutch pedal is around halfway released. If that doesn't happen, something is assemble incorrectly.
