L = December 28 = 28th 2 = year (in this case 1962) which makes sense for a 1963 engine.
Here are some casting codes on L6 engines I have/had. Looks like my 1963 230ci was cast only 33 days after yours.
A 292 has features that set it apart from the 230ci and 250 ci.
