That's a resounding NO! The wire runs the full length of the driver spear, AKA the steering shaft, so cutting and splicing creates a stress point due to the constant twisting the wire gets. Of course, it would be possible to run a new wire, preferrably something very flexible like the wire used for voltmeter test leads.
