Normally when a person hears the motor fire, they release the button and starter stops turning and motor keeps running. I think you are saying that the motor does not fire at all until button is released. Is that correct?
This means you do not have the starter wired properly.
Does the starter solenoid have a big stud for the battery cable and two other smaller terminals?
Are these terminals labeled "B" (BATT) "S" (SOL) "R"
