Hy Ray2, what type of distributor are you using, a point type one or an H.E.I. one? What type of starter motor activation switch are you using, a key switch which activates the starter when the key is turned all the way to the right, or a push button switch which activates the starter when pushed? If you are using a point type distributor your resistor bypass circuit may be open or damaged.
