Many a pencil has been lost behind that trim. There is a gap between the trim and the windshield and it's a perfect place for small things to become trapped. If you try to retrieve them, the windshield is in the way of your hand and fingers. It's not one of Chevy's best designs but it is what it is. The clips for the trim act as a standoff.
