UR2SLO, My wife tells me it's because back in the day, a gentlemen would open the door for a lady. Made sense to her to have it on the passenger side. I don't buy it though... I just toss her the key, on my way out the door, and tell her to lock my side as well. (I'm just kidding Peg!)
