As you drop the distributor, the oil pump tang (and rotor) will turn as the distributor drive gear meshes with the cam shaft gear. You will have to turn the rotor slightly to compensate or the tang will not engage in the oil pump, preventing it from dropping fully.
What I do, in addition to marking the distributor as you did, is to place one additional mark (rotor to distributor) as your pulling out the distributor, just after the drive gear clears the cam gear, so you know where to set the rotor (how much compensation) so tang engages the oil pump.
