If the ball is not round, the heavy springs in the matting part compressed and expand as you turn, this cause the driver to work harder each time. With round balls, the springs stay at a constant pressure. Also note in the second picture where to cup has dug into the stem of the ball. This is normal wear and needs to be addressed.
