I did something similar on my truck. My cab lower structure including the mounts was in poor condition. I figured out that with the failed mounts, the cab sags and is able to move up and down some. Since the steering column is secured at one end in the steering box and anchored to the dash at the other, it resists the motion of the cab and eventually there is damage to the column mount.
