Good point about the need to provide fused protection for the ammeter. After more thought here is what I would do if this were my truck and I was committed to the AAW harness. I would modify the wiring diagram and connect as shown in either one of the photos attached. You are correct, the 175 amp fuse does not provide good protection and I would drop down to maybe 50 or 60 amps fuses. Also be sure to keep the fuses independent and do not use the jumper shown in the original AAW diagram. Mega fuses should be mounted under the hood, not under the dash. If I have a good solid post on the ammeter I would connect the fuse panel directly to the ammeter, same terminal as the alternator feed wire. Otherwise run the 10 gage fuse panel wire to the mega fuse terminal. Use 8 or 10 gage wires for the added ammeter connections. This modified diagram provides fused protection for fuse panel and ammeter.
In my opinion one 'better way' is to start with a fuse panel that includes both a alternator feed and a battery feed. Simply wire the ammeter in series between the fusible link at the starter solenoid and the battery feed terminal on the fuse panel. Painless has such a fuse panel and that is what is used on my truck, including full function ammeter. No problems in many years and thousands of miles.
