Carl, I did a little experiment, dipping the original bracket in muriatic (hydrochloric) acid. It took the plating off very quickly.
According to
this video, zinc reacts quickly with the acid, while cadmium is not nearly as reactive. So based on that, these brackets were originally zinc plated.
So the monkey wrenches are successfully dodged.
