I don't have a picture handy, but the spring does go on the outside of the heat riser. The shaft should have a slot on one side and a pin on the side of the riser. The center of the spring goes in the slot and the outside of the spring will have a curl or a loop to fit on the pin. You may have to wind the spring a tad to get it to stay snug on the pin. Don't wind it too tight (that is an extra turn after it already has tension. If the pin has rusted off, you may be able to drill a small hole and use a roll pin, but if there is a lot of play on the shaft, you may have to replace the valve. Hope this helps.
