Thanks to all who took the time to share their experience.
I now have a precise understanding of the steps and proper procedure involved and am confident this project can be successfully completed over the winter without having to repaint the the roof. This is a relief. The roof responded so well to a little compound and polish that it would have been a shame to take it all off just to reapply the rail sealer. (See photo, attached).
