I leave mine without anything in there even though there was something there originally. The original material had a tar-like substance in it which shrinks, creating a space allowing the hood to move up and down, resulting in creating damage to the hood from constant hammering into the shrunken material.
If this material is left out, and you have the hood adjusted properly with the rear of the hood down tight against the hood seal, no contact will occur.
