With the starter on the bench,
move the lever front & back
and make sure the drive gear moves freely.
When the lever touches the button, the drive gear
should be fully extended, with about a 1/2" to go.
When the lever pushes in the button
the drive gear moves that additional 1/2" and is fully engaged.
If you loosen the 2 screws that hold the button to the starter,
sometimes you can get a slight adjustment.
