I had a brand new sending unit for my '53 fall apart in my hands. No welds just tabs bent over. Not wanting to put heat on it I managed to get it back together and bent the tabs more securely. Two years and counting on the result. Looks to me like you might be able to drill a couple of holes and rivet it back together.
