I'd want to catch the trash before it went into the pump...
What electric pump are you using? The one I have on my fire engine is a Faucet and I've had good success with them, but I still carry and NIB pump with me at all times.
I rigged the electric connections at the pump with pull apart connectors and have the new pump with a connector already installed making on the road replacement fast and easy. They will ALL fail at some point...
Why aren't you using the mechanical pump on the 235?
