Daimler has been experimenting with something like that. They have some idea of making a completely "drive by wire" car-the pdals don't donnect to anything, all electrical. So far, they have not been sucsessfull. Seems that the brakes electricla componets have a high fail rate. The US will not even allow them to test on public roads here like they did in Europe.
