Even with the iron tower, the pins can be loose, they are short, like 1/2" and very small wear amounts can allow the shifter to wiggle hugely from side to side. The notches/keyways in either side of the pivot ball portion of the shift lever can wear too. Those areas are pretty common trouble spots for any top shifter trans.
