So, the mystery has been solved. I brought the generator to the old-timey electric repair shop. The nearly 90 year old owner immediately spotted the problem. It's a counter clockwise generator. How the hell I ended up with that I'll never know. Anyway, he said it's real simple to switch the field windings to make it clockwise and he'll have it done tomorrow. Score.
