She cranks great but hard starting. When I step on the button she cranks, but will usually only fire right at the end of the cranking when I let off the starter.It's like the ignition isn't getting much juice when the starter is cranking. Once running, she's great. Here's the situation:
1949 Chevy 6400 (2 ton dump bed) with a 216 engine. Converted electrical to 12 volt: 12 volt battery, new alternator, 6 volt starter, voltage reducer for the coil. Many new wires...I replaced the STEEL wire from the coil to the distributor with a copper one since it was mainly bare. I remember somebody saying the steel wire was important for the resistance in the circuit. Anybody able to confirm this? Could this be the problem? I have no idea how to trouble shoot this...
Decent compression. Points OK, plugs OK.
I have pulled the starter and cleaned. Replaced gear and bushing.
Fuel OK, when I shoot starter fluid at it, it's still is hard to fire, so I'm pretty sure it's an ignition problem...Any ideas would be appreciated
