Ed, I just discovered my pilot light issue was partially a grounding issue. While chasing down a brake light problem I re-cleaned the steering column under the Signal-Stat 900 flasher switch. I'd initially scraped the paint to provide a ground when I installed turn signals. After a quick sanding, the pilot light will flash a couple times then stop. Next step will be to remove the bulb and see if I can spot a contact/continuity issue.
Added in edit; this afternoon I pulled the top cover off the ol SignalStat 900 turn-signal switch, then pulled the pilot light bulb. All looked good, grounding it to a proven ground made no change. When the turn-signals are activated, the bulb will light up very brightly, flash a time or two, then dim and not flash. My current theory is it's all related to the fact that I'm running a old stock, flasher unit. With LED's in the rear and stock incandescent bulbs up front, the flasher isn't seeing sufficient load to operate the pilot bulb. A weak theory I know. The test would be to reinstall the incandescent bulbs in the rear and see what happens. If I do, I'll report the results. The problem is, if the test causes the pilot to work, I'm not sure what good that is since I don't know how to fix the problem. A digital or electronic flasher unit ? When I've tried those in the past, the turnsignals flashed unacceptably fast.
Good Luck,
RonR
