Bowtietim- I think the '83 manual might say gear lube, the manual I'd be interested to see is the '85 because the NHTSA recall was issued in '84 so it wouldn't make it into the owner's manuals til the new model year.
I have an '85 S-10, the manual says to refer to the maintance shedule for lubrication, the schedule states that the 5 speed for S-10 uses dexron 2 (now 3) atf.
