There is a timing-mark hole on the forward face of the clutch housing, above the starter, on the passenger side. The pointer inside of the hole should line up with the ball in the face of the flywheel. This will get you close to #1 or #6 TDC. When number one is firing, both valves should be closed.

Figure 6 is a picture of the timing mark from an automobile manual.
