A simple solution could be to use a single filament 6 or 12 volt bulb, depending on your battery voltage. Solder a couple of leads with alligator clips to it. Hook one lead to coil primary, other to ground. If bulb is lit, key is on. I think that would work even with points closed but not sure as I’ve never tried it.
