Please don't remove the end of the metering rod. Just lift up carefully and let it down and you can feel it bottom out or you can touch it on top to see if there's room left to move down. Once you get the feel for this procedure it is like riding a bike. San Angelo is a nice place. Could use more rain but most of Texas could. I spent a decent amount of my youth out that way. Like Carl says, be patient with the flapper. You'll get it to free up in time. I don't believe that's the answer to the idle rpm question, but it will keep the engine from running as it should.
