'53 used the ball and socket gas pedal. I prefer the '47-'52 pin arrangement. If your linkage/bellcrank gets jammed up with the ball and socket pedal, you can't dig your toe under the gas pedal and free it up. All you do is pop the ball out of the socket.
I guess GM saved a few pennies per truck with the simpler to install on the line, ball and socket design.
