I think the secret is to find a remover just strong enough to remove the top material but not the original lacquer. Problem is that depending on what is on it, the stuff you want to remove might be tougher to cut that the lacquer underneath.
Maybe some paint smiths can get on here and formulate a list of removers from less aggressive to most aggressive. Start with less and move up as needed.
