The "Car" starter has a solenoid. The "Truck" starter has a mechanical switch. Both can be 6 or 12 volt If the ground cable did not stop the starter, then I am at a loss how the circuit was completed. That is new to me. The solenoid can stick. That would keep the starter running and engaged. Great way to destroy the armature windings if it continues for too long. The stomp starter can fuse the switch. The starter will disengage, and still run. That will also cause the armature to overheat. But it will not throw the windings off. My 6 volt starter will coast for a bit after the engine starts, but that is not a big issue. Yes it is in a 12 volt system. But it is matched to a 6 volt flywheel. That does make a difference. So the question we need to know is this, start button, or foot switch?
