My pop (83) helped me puzzle this one out. The stuff inside the tube is actually horse hair - so it won't rust and fall out. Burn it to clean it and you burn up the hair, but not a big deal. Painted mine the color of the engine. Popped it back in with some gentle raps with a ballpine...
