So I'm getting ready to clean and paint the wheels on my 53 one ton. These are the three piece rims, inner, outer, and locking ring. They are pretty ugly right now, even though four of them are mounted on the truck with good tires and holding air.
The question is, when I clean them up prior to painting, is it acceptable to use rust converter on them? I've seen comments that the rust converter weakens the steel, which I wouldn't want on the wheels. But they will need something, and there is no sandblaster in my area, so that's out.
Opinions? Suggestions? Experiences? Let me know!

I am currently digging back in to a 1953 3800 (one ton) with a nine foot bed. I've owned it since 1979, and drove it until 1982 (or so). My wife got me involved in restoring it back in 2002, got the body removed and the frame redone, then things came up. Now I am retired and starting again.
