The '54 Chevy station wagon my folks owned had none. We used to take long trips in the summer with the 4 of us kids bouncing around in the back with the rear seat folded flat. My mom once got T-boned by a drunk with my youngest sister standing behind the front seat. Fortunately the only casualty was the right side doors.
The laminated glass just kept the whole body from going thru the windshield, but wasn't much help preventing injury to non-seat belted occupants. That and the non-collapsible steering columns, impaling the driver.
We are all fortunate to have survived that era.
