You can disconnect either way. I think the easiest way is to remove the bolts from the door. When you remove the bolts from the jam, you end up wrestling a heavy door where the hinge, broken spring, wrong angle, etc might hang you up. Removing the bolts from the door gives you a single plane for removal which is moving the door toward the rear of the vehicle. Or, you could just remove all 12 bolts at one time and give it a big yank just to see what happens.
