From 1969 on, I believe, the alternator appeared on the passenger side of the engine. Up to 1968, it was on the driver's side.
You could use the earlier brackets and mount the alternator on the driver's side, right above the power steering pump, but you'll have to use a short water pump. The later style uses the long water pump.
Nice job on that 283. It appears that the top of the air filter comes up to about the top of the radiator. That's some excellent clearance below the hood. Looks to me like plenty of room for a roots blower.
