Doesn't a "balancing coil" gauge need to have the case grounded to complete some of the circuits? I believe one coil has a constant current flow to ground, and the other coil has a signal with the sensor providing a variable-resistance path to ground that causes the needle to move. A gas gauge works that way, and I believe the electrical temp gauges have similar wiring.
