I had a '56 Chevy pass car rear (57" wide as I recall) under my '49 at one time and I had to put wheel spacers (1" per side) to keep the tires from rubbing on the outside of the bed with any kind of a load. I was using the '56 pass car rims with this rear end.

I put a '69 pass 12-bolt under it after that (60.5" wide) and never had any problems with tires rubbing. I had 15x7 rims from an S-10 with 235-70 tires on it the last few years before I tore it down for the rebuild I'm currently doing. Even heavily loaded, the tires cleared everything alright.

I did mount the shocks inboard of the frame when I changed the rear end so I don't know if they're an issue or not.
