If you want a little bit of bypass flow to prevent hot spots during warm up, put a restrictor in the hose with a 1/8" or 3/16" hole in it. If you've got a thermostat with a jiggle pin or a bleed hole in it, you don't even need that- - - -just choke off the flow altogether. To test to see if it makes a difference, put a C clamp or vise grips on the hose temporarily.
