First time posting. I have a 1946 Chevy 1/2 ton I'm rebuilding and inquiring about using the Toyota 4x4 mini steering box from 1979-85. I have reviewed a number of posts and think this would be the best option for me. I plan to keep the solid axle front end, use a 350 SBC, 700r4 and have fitted the front disc brake conversion. I saw that Sammy Borders has a 1936 Chevy truck in a 2010 thread which looked like to have the Toyota box and possibly was mounted in the original hole as the old steering box. Here are my questions:
Can the Toyota box work on a 1946 Chevy truck w/ minimal fabrication?
What needs to be done to make the Toyota box compatible to a GM steering pump?
Does any company have a kit for pre-1947 Chevy trucks using this pump? I've check CPP, Brother's, Jim Carter, etc.
Is the conversion worth the expense and labor (headache)? I'm not concerned with turning at a stop as much as how it will handle going highway speeds.
I appreciate any words of wisdom and any details you may have Mr. Borders about your conversion.
