Changing to switched power did the trick as you guys knew it would. I didn't have a spare switched power lead available out of the fuse panel so I just ran off the ign. switch with an in-line mini fuse. After words I saw an adapter at NAPA that plugs into where a fuse would be in your fuse panel effectively adding another fused circuit there. That seems a little cleaner but works fine as is. Here are a couple of photos to show the lack of room with the A/C compressor below. You have to look hard though.

40 Chevy 1/2 ton
