Evening all,
I've been going through all the data sources regarding casting numbers, serial numbers and date code stampings and can't seem to find the answer to the question of what kind of engine I'm looking at so I have come to the source of all info.
I'm looking at what is advertised as a '53 Bel Air 235 with an "automatic" transmission (presumably powerglide). The head casting # is 3701887, which, according to
http://1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt-engine/casting-numbers.html site, is one of the "last low-pressure 235" engines. The date code stamped on the passenger side of the engine is H 203, and there appears to be another number after the 3 that appears to be another 3 or a 0 or just a mark. That, again according to
http://1954advance-design.com/Stovebolt-engine/casting-numbers.html, makes it August 20, 1953 build date. HOWEVER, on the passenger side of the engine, just above the starter are a pair of "captain's bars" which, according to just about every source I've read makes it a 261. So, as Vinnie Barbarino used to say, "I'm so confused".
I'm waiting to get photos of the block casting number and serial number.
Could this have been a 261 that, for some reason, someone put a 235 low pressure head on? If so I'm guessing that's not a good thing. What sort of damage would this have done to the 261?
Anything in particular I should look for when I got see the engine?
