Can you cut openings in the bed sides and let the wheels extend into the bed, in order to do what Mike is suggesting? I believe the hot rodders refer to that as "tubbing".
My Dad had a '46 1 ton pickup when I was growing up. It had sort of mini fender wells on the inside of the box about 3" wide or so.
