Hey Jake, I think your friend got ya straightened out, wouldn't
1 qt. of Rustoleum gloss Black
1 qt. of Rustoleum Flat Black
make 2 quarts of Rustoleum Semi-Gloss?
I use Rustoleum Semi-Gloss (7798) for all my under hood Black and it holds up fine and looks very original. As a side note, in a pinch the Rustoleum Gloss Black can be baked for a few hours at around 200° and it will dull it down to a nice Satiny finish which looks about as good as the Semi-Gloss.
