It is a strong spring. The center just slip fits in the slotted shaft. I put the works in a vice and use vice grips to twist the outer tang of the spring over where it goes. You can't get a full bite on the spring end and get it to go on. Grabbing a corner of the tag end of the spring at a 45 degree angle with the vice grips works after a try or two.
