Delco made a commercial vehicle alternator back in the 1950's that looked like an oversized generator, not the classic short, large-diameter shape we're accustomed to seeing. I had a couple of them at my school shop, along with the regulators they needed. I don't know what the original application might have been, but it didn't look to be military.
